2019 Honda Monkey Test Ride Review [Scooter or Motorcycle?!]

June 18, 2020

Not so new for 2019, the retro-mod revamp of the beloved Honda Monkey is BANANAS, and has modern updates such as a 125cc single cylinder engine, ABS disc brakes, inverted forks, dual rear shocks, and one the most comfortable seats I have ever had the pleasure of sitting on. That little single cylinder catapults the Monkey to a DukeOfDC tested 54 miles per hour.

This thing is BANANAs (pun intended) and Honda knows it. This is part of the three-part 125cc segment that Honda has brought out for 2019, standing next to the Honda SuperCub and Honda Grom. Can this motorcycle stack up against more traditional beginner bikes, such as the 2019 Honda Rebel 300, 2019 Kawasaki Ninja 400, and 2019 Yamaha R3, or is this in a class of its own? Watch and find out 🙂

  • a piece of anti glare film over the instrument cluster might fix the glare issue

  • Well because in some countries if something goes a certain speed it fits a certain category. In Canada a scooter with no license requirement can't go faster than 30km an hour, so this thing is a motorcycle.

  • Great to see someone having pure honest fun in a bike review. Here in Australia these wonderful little Monkeys are AUD$5K+ so I'm waiting for demand and price to decrease. I'd love to know if they're releasing one with a bigger motor – 250 is a nice number . . . :-)) Thanks for the great and fun review. Cheers!

  • Everytime you said monkey in a serious manner I laughed. Jokes aside I think I am going to go buy a monkey and ride it around town and I have seen some ppl do offroading on them as well. lol

  • Would this be a good first motorcycle? I'm about to hit midlife and need a crisis.

  • What is it with Americans and needing more power. When I rode a Honda 50cc Dax it was enough power to get around. You make do with what you have and be happy. This bike is larger in size than the late 60s Monkey. 125cc is a pretty large engine.

  • Does this model allow a passenger on it?

  • $4,000 dollars. Cannot justify the cost. Sorry but that is fucking crazy! For half that you can find a great condition used 650 on/off road motorcycle. This thing makes no sense unless your 12 years old.

  • You’ll need to stick a neodymium magnet on the bottom of your frame to help trip the lights.

  • Do they map these bikes different for the American market because the one I bought from the dealership in the UK is a lot quicker than that.
And why do they put those horrible lights and indicators on the US model ?
Mine does 65 with ease and I’m definitely not a thin person

  • How much do you weigh? I used to go over 60mph on my 2015 Grom all the time. Is the gearing and engine exactly the same as the Grom?

  • It would be great to throw one of these in the back of the truck.

    reno145 June 18, 2020 9:27 pm Reply
  • i just wish they put like the grom engine in the monkey i love the look of the monkey more but that extra 10 mph could make the monkey an actual commuter for me

The Adhd Viking June 18, 2020 9:27 pm Reply
  • How come you get only 51, 52 mph? Most other riders on yt seem to get 60 plus. Are you heavy?
